In October 2020, Aethon Books published my military science fiction trilogy Brothers in Arms: First Strike, 13 Mercs, and One for All.
This was a big creative push for me as it was the first book I wrote in first-person, present tense. (I had experimented with the style many times, but nothing that has been completed or published.) Peter Berkrot did the narration and absolutely slayed it. The guy has talent.
I enjoyed working with Aethon, so when Steve Beaulieu asked me to write another trilogy, I said, “Hell yeah.” I pitched a few ideas and eventually signed a contract for The Cyborg Option, with the first book titled Honor of Cyborgs.
This is the part where I must thank them for their endless patience and belief in my writing. As many of you might already know, I work on more than one project at a time and am currently deeply involved in other series (I think I was working on Galactic Shield and planning Homeworld Lost with J. N. Chaney). Completing all three of The Cyborg Option books took me over two years. For me, that is a long time.
At first, I was slamming five thousand words a day and thought I could meet all my deadlines with room to spare. Sadly, as all the writers who are reading this know, that is never how it works out. The creative process is brutal, and choices have to be made each day about where to spend your energy.
I loved my cyborg story immensely. It turned out to be a darkly epic story about defying a totalitarian regime by making a deal with the devil, then… well, no spoilers here. The book hasn’t even been released yet.
Honor of Cyborgs will be released on April 30, 2024. The second and third books are completed, edited, and ready to go, so there won’t be a long wait. Aethon will release one each month.
I hope you have a chance to give them a try.
The covers, by the way, are by Tom Edwards, who is amazingly talented and a super nice guy.
Take care, everyone, and thanks for visiting my Substack. You can subscribe for free if you haven’t already. Eventually, I will have premium content that will only be available here. Got to burn the candle at both ends to get it done, and many of you have pointed out I shouldn’t destroy myself. So, the premium Substack stuff may not kick off for a while.
You rock. Never forget it.
Can't wait to read it!
I'm always on the hunt for new sci-fi, and this series has definitely caught my interest! Congrats on everything working out, even if it took you longer than expected to get there.
